We did it! We practiced the spiritual discipline of Bible journaling using the acronym POWER together for the month of August! I appreciate every email you all sent with questions, comments or prayer intentions. I appreciate every comment you all left here on The Littlest Way; it’s not always easy to share your heart on the world wide web. I appreciate the insights you shared as you journaled this month. It’s always interesting to read the same passage, but depending on what season you are in right now, it can read very differently…from person to person…or even the same person, different day. Anyway, I’m glad we did this together. We should do it again.
POWERful Bible Journaling: Psalm 23
I’m going to deviate from the POWER acronym for this last entry in my Bible journaling. I have a neat story to share.
As part of our “Family School” (we’re homeschoolers) we have memory work, Scripture Memory, Catechism and Prayers. Last year one of the Scriptures we memorized was Psalm 23. My then six year old boy blew us all away with how quickly and accurately he memorized it. One day he wanted to recite it for dad, so I called Chris in from the barn and he sat down to hear Maximilian recite Psalm 23.
Jump forward…or back…I frequently ask my children, “Why do we memorize Scripture?” The answers are varied, but one of the reasons is because the Scriptures, the Word of God, can offer us comfort and instruct us in times of need. Not only us, but we can use the Word of God to comfort or offer advice to our friends or family.
Back to my story…Chris was very impressed with Maximilian’s recitation for a couple of reasons. First, here’s this cute little guy reciting an entire Psalm. Second, Chris was going through a trying time at work and to hear his little guy reciting, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” was really and truly comforting to Chris at that very moment.
I pray as my children get older, these verse we have memorized will stick with them. I want this treasury of the Word of God for them to fall back on as they navigate life.
Please leave your POWERful reflections in the comments

What a great idea…and how inspiring…
And – I agree – you are amazing parents!

You are good parents; teaching your children about the Bible and memorising psalms. Not many parents do so these days.
God bless you and your family.

Kind words, but sometimes I feel it’s because I am so deficient as a parent that I must introduce them and teach them to build a relationship with their heavenly Father Who lacks nothing.

It’s been awesome and just in time for school when I need the extra practice in perseverance and trust in God.
I love Psalm 23. The image of a Shepard is so comforting in that I don’t have to be super smart or quick on my feet if I simply listen to and follow Him. No offense to the little woolly guys. 😉
Dear God, please help me to have an open mind. Give me the courage to preach the Gospel always, using words if necessary. (St Francis of Assisi) And safeguard your Word deeply in my heart. Amen

Have you read the book “A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23” I think that’s the title. It’s written by a real shepherd explaining Psalm 23. The imagery is amazing.
