Yesterday I mentioned listening to music as a way to get our heart and mind in the mood for reading the Scriptures, Bible Quotes: God’s Word. Some of you may think, “Well that sounds like praise and worship.” You would be right. And some of you may think, “Well that’s not Catholic.” You would be wrong. Today we’re going to look at Bible quotes about praise. Before we get started with Bible quotes about praise, let me give you an explanation of what “Praise” is.
Praise is the form of prayer which recognizes most immediately that God is God. It lauds God for his own sake and gives him glory, quite beyond what he does, but simply because HE IS. It shares in the blessed happiness of the pure of heart who love God in faith before seeing him in glory. By praise, the Spirit is joined to our spirits to bear witness that we are children of God testifying to the only Son in whom we are adopted and by whom we glorify the Father. Praise embraces the other forms of prayer and carries them toward him who is its source and goal: the “one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist.”
–Catechism of the Catholic Church #2639
Prayer of praise is entirely disinterested and rises to God, lauds him, and gives him glory for his own sake, quite beyond what he has done, but simply because HE IS.
–Catechism of the Catholic Church #2649
Make sense? Our understanding of praise now is horizontally focused: on ourselves, the people around us, the music, the encouraging words, etc. But praise isn’t about us…It’s all about Him. First and foremost, praise is prayer. And more importantly, it’s a pray we offer to God simply because He’s God. And beginning our alone time with God in praise; it’s our recognition of God’s goodness before we can start asking and before He can start answering our prayers.

Praise is prayer. And prayer is talking to God. Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI stated, “Prayer should not center just on asking God to fulfill one’s hopes and desires, but must include praise, thanks and trust in God’s plan which may not match one’s own.” Our prayers should include praise…as well as thanksgiving and trust. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to pray without ceasing. So we should also praise without ceasing. One of the best ways to praise God is to use His Word. It totally takes the focus of us and our needs or wants and simple uses His own words.
I’ve compiled a list of Scriptures about “praise.” Again, I encourage you to print this out tuck it into your Bible. I’ve also created a pretty printable for “praise” in the Psalms.
