Yesterday we looked up verses about the devil. Today we’re going to look up Bible quotes about the angels. Again, I’m going to also pull information from the saints and from a homily by a known exorcist. As I mentioned yesterday, although these posts are about Bible quotes, just like reading the owner’s manual to your car is helpful, others who have actually driven your car or have first hand knowledge and experience with your particular model are also helpful. This post is a continuation of my 31 Days of Bible quotes.
Bible Quotes: Angels in the Bible

Before you get a comfy, cozy image in your mind of a bunch of fat, little dimpled angels…don’t. Angels don’t have bodies. And before you think, “Well, how insulting to my Guardian Angel Bertha!” Your Guardian Angel’s name is not Bertha. According to the Vatican and a known exorcist, Do Not Name Your Angel! The reason is found in the Book of Genesis. God brought the animals to Adam to name because Adam had authority over the animals. You do not have authority over your angel. And finally, your long departed great-great grandma is not an angel in heaven. Dead people do not become angels. Angels were created angels…people were created people. For more in depth information on your Guardian Angel, this homily is extremely informative and I highly urge you to listen to it. Now from Father John Hardon, “When speaking about the angels, we should keep two things in mind. There was a real development of faith as the biblical revelation on the angels unfolded. There has also been a marvelous development of doctrine over the centuries, in the Church’s deeper and clearer understanding of the angels and their role in salvation history.”
Angels are just as real as devils. Where the devils primary goal is to accuse, tempt and torment…the angels are meant to guide, protect and encourage. Who do we choose to pay attention to? So often in the world now, it seems out attention is turned to the evil. And maybe in our own life, so often our mind seems fixed on the negative or bad events. But if we were to switch our attention to the good–to our blessings; we may become more aware of the movements of our Guardian Angels just by becoming more aware of the good in our life.
Our angel’s role is to guard, guide and protect. Father Ripperger says their goal is to help us act more according to our nature, which is a rational human being. “If you are functioning as normally, you’re angel is probably pretty active behind the scenes and keeping you protected.”
Saint Basil, who died in A.D. 379, states, “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.” And Psalm 91:11 states, “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” And in Matthew 18:10, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.”
We’ve established angels are real, not fairy like squishy babies with wings, and meant for our good. So why do we ignore them? Yes, we ignore them. How often do you think of your Guardian Angel? How often do you thank God for your Guardian Angel? How often do you thank your Guardian Angel? Father Ripperger says the more help you ask from your Guardian Angel, the more involved in your life they will be.
From Father Hardon, “We are to solicit their continued enlightenment so we might know the divine will and understand how to fulfill it. We are also to ask for their prayers so we might have the courage and generosity to put the will of God into practice. As St. Ambrose puts it, “The angels should be entreated for us, who have been given us to guard us.” The phenomenal increase of interest in angels in our day should tell us something. More than ever before in Christian history, we are to deepen our knowledge of the angels.”
Kendra over at Catholic All Year has made a couple of fun printables with the Guardian Angel Prayer on them. Please teach your children this lovely prayer. Please teach them they have heavenly friends in this life, appointed solely for them by God the Father. What a comforting thought to grow up knowing.
*Although I’m not sure of the source of their information, this post seems to match up well with Father Ripperger’s homily on angels and it gives Scripture references per each point.
